Ovality Locked to ≤ 0.015 mm
Standard extruded aluminum carries a hidden ovality and wall-thickness variance that collets can’t fully correct. At high spindle speed, that becomes runout — the source of chatter marks, tool wear, and scrapped coaxiality.
Six Selection Traps Shops Overlook When Sourcing Aluminum Rod
Ovality is one piece of the picture. These six details rarely show up on a standard spec sheet — and each one alone can cause scrap or downtime on an automated line.
Straightness (bow) is not the same thing as ovality
Swiss-type lathes feed long bar stock through a guide bushing. Perfect roundness doesn’t prevent radial deflection at the bushing if straightness is out of tolerance — producing taper or surface waviness on long, slender parts.
Guide bushing wear accelerates far beyond expectation, and the cause is never traced because the roundness report was “fully compliant.”
Inconsistent temper condition changes cutting behavior entirely
T6511 versus H111 in the same alloy has different hardness, elongation, and chip-formation behavior. The wrong temper doesn’t fail spec — it invalidates every speed and feed parameter the shop has tuned.
Chip-sticking and poor surface finish appear at “correct” cutting parameters — hours lost before the temper mismatch is found.
Batch-to-batch diameter consistency is easier to miss than single-rod ovality
A single rod can pass with excellent ovality while the nominal diameter drifts systematically across the batch — enough to throw off bar-feeder collet-stroke settings partway through.
The first half of a batch runs cleanly; the second half triggers intermittent alarms that look like an equipment fault.
Cut-length tolerance affects automatic feeder cycle timing
Bar feeders have explicit cut-length tolerance requirements. Excess length variation throws off feed-stroke calculations.
Every new batch needs feeder re-tuning — a hidden changeover cost that outweighs any price difference in the material.
End-face burrs and chamfer condition affect the feed channel
Burrs or an inconsistent chamfer can jam the automatic feed channel, especially below Φ25mm.
A single jam on an unattended line means the whole line stops and waits for manual intervention.
Heat/lot traceability determines hours vs. weeks to diagnose
If an anomaly shows up on your line, tracing it to a specific heat/lot, composition, and factory test data determines how fast root cause is found.
A quality dispute with no traceable data drags the claims process on indefinitely.

Clamp Without Slip, Turn Without Runout
Three-point cold-draw sizing and dual-axis laser inline scanning, engineered to eliminate ovality and wall eccentricity before material reaches your collet.
Cold-Drawing
Multi-Pass Drawing with 3-Point Sizing Dies
Every rod and seamless tube is drawn through multiple fine passes and finished on custom 3-point sizing dies, correcting the residual ovality that two-point drawing and raw extrusion leave behind.
Ovality & eccentricity ≤ 0.015 mm · Swiss-lathe grade ±0.005 mm
Matched to two product lines: 6061-T6511 rod for Swiss-type lathes and seamless tube for motor shafts and pneumatic sleeves.
Inline Inspection
100% Laser Roundness Scanning, Not Sampling
A dual-axis laser gauge runs continuously on the finishing line, measuring every rod and tube — not a batch sample. Out-of-tolerance material is flagged and pulled before it ships.
From Extrusion Billet to Your Lathe
Ovality control is a system, not a single process step. Six checkpoints, from raw material to delivery.
Extrusion Billet
Alloy composition and initial OD tolerance formed.
Multi-Pass Cold-Drawing
OD tolerance tightened pass by pass, removing extrusion defects.
3-Point Sizing
Locks ovality/eccentricity to ≤0.015mm — CNC dimensional stability
Laser 100% Scan
Continuous geometric scan; out-of-tolerance batches auto-rejected.
Precision Cut-to-Length
MQL sawing ensures end-face squareness, no feed-channel jams.
Inspection & Shipping
Third-party inspection, traceable to heat/lot number.
Selection Guidance by Buyer Type
Feed method, diameter range, and tolerance sensitivity vary widely. Open your category to find the right spec directly.
CNC Machining Shops & Swiss-Type Lathes
Φ6–Φ25mm
SMALL-DIAMETER PRECISION PINS
Continuous bar feeding on Swiss lathes is most sensitive to straightness and end-face quality. Recommended: Swiss-lathe-grade ±0.005mm, with ends processed via precision MQL sawing.
Φ25–Φ80mm
MEDIUM-TO-LARGE SHAFTS
On conventional automatic lathes, the standard ≤0.015mm grade is sufficient in most cases — no need to pay the Swiss-lathe premium unless spindle speed exceeds 8,000 RPM.
Motor Shaft Manufacturers
High-speed
ROTATING SHAFTS
Wall eccentricity translates directly into dynamic imbalance. Check the eccentricity report on our seamless tube series for motor shafts, not just OD tolerance.
High-volume
ASSEMBLY SHAFTS
Batch-to-batch diameter consistency matters more than single-rod ovality — request batch distribution data, not just a spot-check report.

HIGH-RPM PULLEYS / ROLLERS
Runout compounds into vibration fatigue over time — check the zero-runout standard in our alloys for high-RPM pulleys and rollers.

FORGED SLEEVES
If strength matters more than pure geometric precision, hot-forged aluminum bar may be a better starting point than cold-drawn rod.
Material & Process Requirements — Non-Negotiable Checklist
Confirm these before ordering. Missing any one can leave incoming material mismatched to your line.
- Tolerance grade — standard ≤0.015mm or Swiss-lathe-grade ±0.005mm, matched to actual spindle speed and feed method, not defaulted to the tightest available.
- Temper condition — T6511 / T6 / H111, must correspond exactly to the cutting parameters on your drawing.
- Batch consistency data — request batch-level diameter distribution, not just a single-rod report.
- Cut-length tolerance & end-face treatment — confirm compatibility with your bar feeder / collet stroke settings.
- Heat/lot traceability — every batch’s composition and inspection data must be traceable.
